SABIC Rail Car Hazmat Incident

At 0910 Onesquethaw Fire was requested for one engine and fire police to assist Selkirk Fire Department with a Hazmat incident at the SABIC plastic facility. 25-31 responded with 6 class A firefighters to the staging area at 1244 Feura Bush Road. Units were then deployed with the cooling of a rail car that was actively leaking a styrene monomer, which is used to make plastic. Around approx. 1000 Selkirk command issued a mandatory 1/2 mile evacuation zone around the rail car and 1-mile shelter in place order. No residences were in the immediate 1/2 mile zone. Residents in the Onesquethaw district were sheltered in place from the bridge over CSX rail yard to Old Quarry Road. The roads in the area were shut down. OVFC units remained on the scene for 12 hours assisting with operations. Multiple local, state, and federal agencies responded to control the incident.
